Als Vater hat man ja immer Angst, daß die eignen Kinder irgendwann denken die Milch kommt aus dem TetraPack. Um das zu verhindern besuchen wir regelmäßig den Zoo in München Hellabrunn. Auf wenn ich die Tierhaltung absolut grausam finde und der Eintrittspreis mit 9 Euro pro Person sicherlich kein Schnäppchen ist. Spaß macht es trotzdem. Das fasziniertenste für meine Tochter sind allerdings derzeit noch die riesigen Spielplätze (und vielleicht die Seelöwen). |

If I attach an image into a rich text field the default compression option is always set. I do not want extra compression for my images but I am not able to select a default. |

Eclipse is an Open Source IDE initiated by IBM. As it now runs on my Debian Linux I can play with it and I like it. At least it looks cleaner than NetBeans. Unfortunately speed is an issue. It is not any faster on my Linux box than NetBeans (and the later is not famous to run like hell). |

Just a Design study for the Notes Client possibilities. It has been done due to one of the Notes is ugly discussions and took about 2 hours. The design is taken from the Open Source bulletin board YABB (Yet another Bulletin Board). This is a spare time fun project so no money has been wasted. The app uses some of the new features provided by Notes V6. |

Screenshot on Debian GNU Linux Unstable with KDE3.1.1. Installing the IDE is as easy as most Java applications. Take the zipped version and extract to a folder or run the Installer based version. This version has a noticeable performance improvement. |
Movable Type moves Domino |

Yes I know you can do it better. But if you try to display a lot of information in a Notes6 portal it is hard to not get it too busy. Buttons, scrollbars, clumsy colors everywhere. Even IBM can do it better. The Websphere portal solution do not look that bad |

Thats the Konqueror "Explorer". It also can preview files and on mouseover it displays a nice preview pane of the actual window. One of the funny things is that Linux and KDE need more power than my W2K partition. Having an Athlon XP 1800+ at the moment I do not feel a difference. If you mouse over an mp3 file it starts to play immediately without opening a seperate program. It just works. |

Lotus Notes, Macromedia Fireworks and Lotus Sametime. So I still use Win4Lin for my Notes Full Client. Everything works just nice and Windows 98 boots in 5 seconds. I am currently experimenting with Jabber.org but still use Sametime a lot. |

Thats my default desktop. No it is neither a command prompt nor a 640 x 480 16 color screen. Its just Debian Unstable. Unstable means no crashes in the last 14 days so far. Using an USB 2.0 48 x CD Burner and Mustek Scanner, playing mp3 files and watching DVD. It just works. |

Sorry, but this remembers me of my first tries some years ago while using AOL Homepage Builder. It is my personal opinion but I think the Logo is old and if you look at it you can see it. There is no large picture for this. |

If you look at my site you might notice the W3C logo. Okay who cares you might say. Well, well designed W3C websites have a higher chance of being usuable on other platforms like Mac or Linux. Have a look at a Linux screenshot using Phoenix 0.5 on Mandrake 9.0. Nice, isn`t it ? Please note that according to Jake Howlett I am still a font-bitch (using fixed font sizes that causes trouble especially on the Mac). |

Thanks for letting me know this. Why does the view not disappear. Client is not active, compacted workspace, compacted database though. It disappears after a while but the screen is annoying. |

Automatic HW / Software Inventory |

Using extensively Lotus Script & Visual basic I have programmed a HW / Software Monitoring System. It collects the basic user data and scans the registry for installed Software. I like the new view display options in Notes6. |

The system also collects basic software. The scanning is scheduled once a month because the scans generate lots of data. The collected data does not fit on the screen but is quite complete. Unfortunately it only scans for programs that have a registry entry (Photoshop also works without one). There is still room for improvements. The scan works on all w32 systems including XP. |

The Hardware Scan provides some basic information about the current hardware. It is automatically scanned once a week. I still have problems to get the Mac address. It sometimes happens than it is not displayed. It does also crash if you start it more than twice a day so there is still a lot of things to do. |

Drag & Drop Files to the Bookmark Workspace |

Attached is a screenshot. Using Notes6 you can drag and drop external files and you will get a workspace icon. Of course this does only work displaying bookmarks in workspace style. As always the beloved original workspace is ignored. The icons are not always displayed. The first is an html file, the 2nd and third are OpenOffice (sxw,xls). Second row starts with a jpg followed by a pdf. If you remove the icon, the original file is not deleted. |

I love and hate rich text fields. Well I do not like them for the web. If you use a text field on the web in a form you will only get one line for entering your data. Not that comfortable. Well you can hack around this using some passthru on the form. Hide the original field on the web in Edit Mode and the PassThru on the Client and you are done. |

My site is hosted on a Linux server. Most of my screenshots are png. I noticed that compressed png files do not work in a webbrowser referencing them with the $file Url. Well just do not compress the image and it works fine for me. It really is time for png support for Domino (compressed gif and jpeg works fine). Annoying if you forget to deselect the option. |

See the hack result using Phoenix. The Domino Post event will work as long as the PassThru is using the Notes fieldname and the original field is hidden. Nice, isn`t it ? This might not be new. I am sure it has already been mentioned but I stumbled around it when working on my new site design. I apologise if somebody think I stole the tip. Indeed I did not. Indeed you can but the dialogue box is one of the worst ones. The list is small, it only lists bookmarked databases, if you are an Administrator like me you get 100 replica versions. Why can it not just display a modified open database dialogue enhanced with just another design level display. Therefore I can select the server, the database and the view by myself. Indeed if you design on a fresh client, using only local databases and have little icons the current method might work. |
Rant-Mode on - Insert multiple shared fields in D6 |

Well using Notes Designer 6 you can now insert multiple Shared Actions but you cannot with Shared fields. Workaround put them on a Subform and insert the subform. Well not handy anyway. I love the Domino Designer but those annoying little things just make me think IBM is not using their own dogfood. There is no large picture for this. |

Fully functional running with Win4Lin VNet enabled. Win4Lin is a great product (besides that it uses the Linux font rendering). Not that it looks bad but different. Not too good if i try to use it to preview websites in Internet Explorer. It is not comparable to VMWare but has a nice price (about 80 Euros). You can watch video, play mp3 files and all the stuff you need for daily business (no games support sorry). I had no success running Sametime with Wine yet. Any hints are welcome. |

Using XML, Java, CSS HTML and Lotus Script. The database generated automatic (and fully dynamic) stock charts for my employeer. The database had been alive (and never failed) for more than 12 months and has only been cancelled because of the high fees for the XML data provider. Although only a small project one of the most challenging I had for the past months. I saved a screenshot. As the database stored some of the charts it also included a statistics module for the investor relations department. The database had multiple language support but the screenshot only shows the german figures. |

Hab ichs schon erwähnt Lotus Domino ist eine meiner Leidenschaften und Linux abenso. Leider paßt das nicht so zusammen wie ich es mir erhoffen würde. In letzter Zeit ist IBM dazu übergegangen nur das anzubieten was Mickysoft ebenfalls zur Verfügung stellt. Nun gibt es halt keinen Outlook Client also auch keinen Notes Client. Ich behelfe mir mit Wine und der Behelf wird immer besser. Zur Verdeutlichung habe ich ein paar Screenshots vorbereitet.Hier zwei Quickshots von Notes6. Läuft noch nicht so schön wie R5 aber das wird sicherlich noch. |
